And So it begins…

Day 1 of my liquid protein pre-op diet. First shake was delicious. I must remember this next week when I am gagging on the 35th chocolate shake. I decided to just get the chocolate shakes as the vanilla ones always have a funny taste. I chose this title because I am a huge fan of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. “And so it begins…” was said by King Theoden just before the battle of Helm’s Deep. He is viewing the attacking army of Uruk-hai warriors. All looks lost, the odd's insurmountable, the enemy is butt ugly, it begins to rain, they have little chance of success, BUT they win. Just like I will in this weight loss battle.

This two week pre-op diet is my Helm’s Deep. Oh don’t you just love when you can compare something you are doing to a movie. I know this is called something in literature but my brain is foggy (no sugar?) so can’t think of the English term. I think my fascination with the LOTR is not so much the movies but of Aragorn, the main character played by Viggo Mortenson.

And so it begins…1 down, 41 to go! Wish me luck.

I'm half way through my third week of drinking two protein shakes a day and still don't think they're that bad. I did chocolate and vanilla Pure Protein (35 grams) from Trader Joe's for pre-op but my surgeon's office requires Isopure for the first month after surgery. It has a little undertone of soap, but for 50 grams of protein per 12 ounces (I do 6 oz 2x per day), not so bad.

I don't know if you have Coscto (bulk store) up there but I'm thinking of trying those next. I hear the cost ends up being about a dollar each (US). They only have chocolate though. I'll probably order some unflavored so I can add it to other foods.

As I said in my blog, somewhere during the third day of liquid pre-op, I just stopped being hungry. I've never been a big emotional eater so the whole thing wasn't too bad. Just stay busy.

Really? You didn't think they smell just like play doh?? Well I am delighted that you like the way they taste! I tried to jazz things up with some sugar free syrup from the coffee places...that really helped choke them down. Banana is a good one, if you can find it.

Sandy, you wondered about going back to SWLC to get the stitch out? I wouldn't bother. I was there for about 5 minutes...asked a few questions that I really could have asked via email, and actually, when she took the stitch out, she cut a little bit of my skin and made me bleed. Not sure I'd want to make the drive for THAT! lol! I have a fill appointment 2 weeks from now, and another one 2 weeks from then. They fill up pretty fast!

As for veggies...I did roast garlic, and let me tell you...lifesaving. A clove or two mixed with some dry fried mushrooms at the last minute...it's like heaven after a few of those shakes! The roasted garlic in moderation is ok, according to the folks at SWLC. So is mixing a couple of blackberries or raspberries into your shakes.
