Not a Happy Camper

Not at all happy. I saw my family doctor last Friday and heard back yesterday about some of my bloodwork.

WTF!!

I lose 20% of my body weight and my cholesterol went from 6.4 to 8.1 (sorry my US Pals, I don't know the measurement you use). Just know it was high and is now very very high to the point that I will now have to go on drugs to lower it.

WTF!!

My BP didn't go down at all and we have now doubled my blood pressure meds to see if we can lower it. And that is after losing 20% of my fat.

I see my doc on May 16th (he's on vacation for the next three weeks). I'm hoping that my other results are better and normal. Liver enzymes, blood sugars, B12, Thyroid. Of course I googled all sorts of things and found out I have a 8% chance of dying in the next ten years. Yup all those medical sites have these calculators to figure out risk. That means that out of 100 people with the same risks as me (high cholesterol, high BP), 8 of those people will be dead from heart disease in the next 10 years.

I know being in menopause may be one cause. Hereditary another. Losing more weight might help a bit by reducing the weight I carry around my gut. I also want to see if my thyroid is normal as high cholesterol is something that shows up in hypothyroidism. I have so much work still to do. No more sitting on my laurels and just accepting this weight. And I will also get off my bum and get walking.

So I asked for another re-fill to get me back to my green spot, because losing another 20 pounds is no longer an option but a necessity. I'm waiting for the clinic to call me back after Easter to discuss. I had a 0.5 cc unfill in early March and last week got a refill of 0.2 cc. I asked for another 0.2 cc so will see.

The only thing that makes me feel better is that I may have been in even worse shape if I hadn't lost the weight. But seriously, just call me...

How frustrating! I'm sorry you didn't see better numbers.

I know you are aware that there are many other conditions that are affected by weight loss(mobility issues, diabetes, joint issues, psychological problems to name a few). You may have already averted future problems in these areas with the weight loss you've already achieved. So don't be discouraged! You are getting healthier, even if your numbers don't reflect it. It could also be that you BP and cholesteral would have gotten much higher if you hadn't lost the weight. Medication will be much more effective with the changes you've already made.

I'm sorry to hear this-- I think I might be in a similar boat with my cholesterol. It sucks.

That's ridiculously frustrating. I'm so damn sorry!! I just can't believe that these numbers won't get better. Especially the cholesterol one - how can you lose weight and that number go up - it seems that there must be some other thing going on and I'm glad you'll be seeing your dr soon to discuss it further. The silver lining, of course, is that you are much healthier - you are paying attention to your health - it's important to you - and you are having these numbers checked. What if you didn't check and didn't go on medicine to help bring the numbers to where they need to be. You take stock in the fact that you are doing the right things for your body - even when the results are completely frustrating.

I'll be right with you in the getting off my ass and moving department. I have been the queen of all things slacking and it's time to get back in gear again!!!

I'm sending lowering vibes to you (did you know they existed? they totally do!!)

I too just got my blood work back and my cholesterol had gone up 30 points.Even though I DO take medication. My HDL is very high so it brings my ratio down low.

I was thinking it's because I eat so little ....but a lot of it is greek yogurt??

WEIRD!

Oh my little Tootsie Roll...I'm so sorry about this news and how it's upsetting you so.
I'm sure your doc will be able to put you back on the right track,

Sorry sweet Sandy. My husband has the same issues. He is on Lipitor and Niaspan and it has really helped. High cholesterol runs in his family.

Ugh. High BP and cholesterol run in my family too. I have been lucky, weight loss has helped my BP. Have not checked my cholesterol yet.....But when it is hereditary, sometimes you can't do too much about it. I had BP issues on and off when I was at my skinniest, in my 20s!

Checking your thyroid is a great idea. Hope you figure this all out. You ARE healthier!

Very frustrating!

At my last appointment my BP was higher than it had been before they put me on meds for it... makes no sense.

Hang in there!

This really sucks! So sorry to hear!

Agree with Amanda's comments. Do these two conditions run in your family?

Well...that sucks. You know what? I think you've inspired me to go to my dr and have some bloodwork done...because I have to wonder if all the protein I eat (aka: meat) could be messing with my formerly good cholesterol etc. I was, prior to weight loss, one of the healthy fat ones. I wonder now if that's stayed the same or changed...

Good God - that sucks donkey dicks like nothing I've ever heard. I hate genetics and all that shit. UGH. Hang in there...

I am in the same situation with the cholesterol. Mine went sky high after I lost 90 lbs. The doctor could not figure out why... I was eating lean protein and low fat... now I am sure it is even higher because I have been loading up on ice cream!

My cholesterol has steadily increased since being banded even though I have lost almost 100 pounds. Crazy! Not sure what is up with that either.
